We recently migated to z/OS V1R4 from z/OS V1R2. Since then we have been facing few problems with a huge HFS file about 10 volumes (3390-3) size. The HFS is about 90% full and using its 10th volume.

C/C++ developers work in this HFS, when they do compiles/makefiles and later issue ls command, we get message

FSUMF302 readdir() failed: reason code 0000009d: EDC5157I An internal error has occurred.

When we try to go to the mount point of HFS, we get the message cd: /xxx: EDC5157I An internal error has occurred.

When we try to access the mount point from the ISHELL, we get the message Errno=9Dx A MVS environmental or internal error has occurred;
Reason=5B4D000B. Press Enter to continue.

Also we see a message in the log IGW027E HFS OMVS.XXX 551 SYNC INTERNAL ERROR. RC=00000024 RSN=5B260117

Finally to get rid of this problem, we unmount and mount after which we there is no problem for some time.
