Hi,
1) Is it possible to retrieve first 5 characters of a column from a DB2 table?
2) Is it possible use the column function "MAX" on a column that is defined as character in DB2?
3) Why does the S9(8 ) COMP occupies only 4 bytes?
4) Is it possible to have or define multiple MAPS within a MAPSET in CICS?
5) A main DB2-COBOL program reads a file and a DB2-COBOL sub-program updates the table? In this case which call is preferrable? Static or Dynamic?
6) Can we access a QSAM file in a CICS-COBOL program?
Thanks in advance. _________________ MF

Yes. Use substr function. check this link for a detailed explanation of the function SUBSTR

Kolusu,
First of all, my apologies. I started to post only db2 related questions but somehow carried on with other questions as well.
I find the answers very useful.
Thanks a lot. _________________ MF

Kolusu,
Would you please move this topic to interview Q&A section.
Also, please tell me how do you quickly find the link with the search in the site?
For example, to find the link http://www.mvsforums.com/helpboards/viewtopic.php?p=7132#7132 how you would have searched the site before posting.
Please help me in understanding this.
I promise this won't be repeated.
Thanks. _________________ MF

Kolusu,
Basically a MAX column function is used on a column with numeric characters per my understanding. But, why anybody wants to use it on a column that is defined as character. Is it to get the largest string out of it?
Please clarify. _________________ MF

MAX is just an internal sort, using the bit representation of the literal. Therefore MAX will follow the collation sequence of your data.

Mf_user,
Simply narrow down your search to the subject. ex: you are dealing with a CICS question then simply search in the "CICS and Middleware" forum. In this case you are dealing with sequential file access in CICS. so search for "Sequential" and you will find the topic titled "Non-vsam files" and you will find the information you are looking for. Now if you want to link a specific topic in that post, then it is explained here.
http://www.mvsforums.com/helpboards/viewtopic.php?t=5091
Hope this helps...
Cheers
