Hi,
I got to know from the mainframe Admin that the CPU has decreased and MIPS has increased on a monthly trend. I wanted to know, whether the MIPS can be decreased by keeping CPU at its decreased level. Seek for help.
Thanks in advance

well, your mainframe admin is an idiot.
MIPS is a function of hardware
and can only be increased/decreased by an inclusion/exclusion of new hardware.
CPU is also a hardware measurement.
now, maybe CPU usage has decreased for one reason or another.
you are talking apples and oranges.
there are a couple of threads (last month or so) that discusses MIPS and CPU usage,
suggest you search the forum,
as well as do some reading and learn what these terms means. _________________ Dick Brenholtz

Keep in mind that MIPS is a rating of an "engine" rather than a measurement of usage. CPU is usually a measurement of resource used.
If the power of an engine is doubled, it will take less of these resources to do the same amount of work. . . _________________ All the best,

Well, I believe that you're aware that IBM does not consider "MIPS" to be a valid term for use in talking about mainframes? IBM talks about MSU but they won't talk about MIPS anymore. So, your discussion about "MIPS" is pretty much out of date. MIPS is just a single number that represented the overall capability of the system. It is wrong to talk about reducing MIPS since a MIPS number is constant for a machine and cannot be changed, replacing the machine itself gave rise to a different MIPS value but the old machine's rating wasn't changed. _________________ Regards,
