|
|
Can anyone help me in realising the 'significance' of Variable Blocked records compared to Fixed block records?
Is there an explicit 'advantage' in going for VB type record format?
If yes, please let know.
Thanks in advance. And apologies.. if it was a silly query
Thanks,
csk. |

The big advantage is space savings in storing the records. Say a record could be 1000 bytes if each field was filled to the max length but the average data is only a few hundred bytes. Imagine the savings not having to store 1000 bytes of mostly blank bytes.
This can be partially overcome thru newer methods of storing data with compression (DASD and TAPE). _________________ Regards,

Thanks Bill.
That term 'Space saving' was clear and helpful.
Thanks,

Hi,
In that case how does it explain the other way..
i.e. We could always go for VB format, why do we go for FB format?
Any specific reasons again?
Thanks,

Using VB format requires more programming to use the field length values when working with fields/records. _________________ Regards,
