Hello,

When running a sort step, I got the below error message:

J BLOCKSET IS REQUIRED FOR WORK DATA SETS ON VOLUMES WITH MORE THAN 17476 CYLINDERS.

Then I ran that sort step from my personal ID,instead of using production files.It went fine.
But I dont know what the problem was, I mean i did not get by BLOCKSET REQUIRED.
can anyone throw some light on it.

Thanks,
Thrivikram.

You will only get the message if a work dataset is allocated on a 3390 model 27. So depending on SMS routines, disk pools etc will depend on if the problem occurs or not

Blockset is DFSORT's primary and most efficient technique and will be used if at all possible. If Blockset cannot be used for some reason, then a secondary and less efficient technique will be used. Message ICE800I will tell you why Blockset couldn't be used and you should try to remove the condition preventing the use of Blockset if at all posssible.

Here's a link to the Explanation for message ICE285A (the message you received) in "z/OS DFSORT Messages, Codes and Diagnosis Guide" which explains the reason for the message and what you should do about it:

Hello ALL,

Thanks for the response.

I have an input file being sorted out to an out put file.
Code:

//STEPNM  EXEC PGM=SORT,REGION=6M,PARM='SIZE=MAX'
//SORTIN    DD=input file
//SORTOUT DD=output file
//SYSIN DD *
  SORT FIELDS=(1,46,A),FORMAT=PD
/*

But the error Iam getting is ABENDU0285 and sysout displayed was
Code:

"BLOCKSET TECHNIQUE COULD NOT BE USED - REASON CODE IS 01"

Iam suggested to change the SYSIN fields as SORT FIELDS=(1,2,PD,A,3,44,CH,A), mentioning that only first two bits are Packed Decimal.
Then the step ran fine.

Then,I tried giving SORT FIELDS=(1,46,CH,A) and even then the step ran fine.
My Doubts:
1)So will it not make any difference if I dont mention the format as PD.
2)If so what is the use of explicitly mentioning the FORMAT.

Please guide me as this output file is being loaded into a Production table.

Thanks,
Thrivikram.

I don't think the SORT statement was the cause of this situation. Something else is going on. But I'd need to see all of the //SYSOUT messages for the bad run to tell you what happened. Do you still have the messages for that run? If so, post them here.

Have you tried adding a dd card for SORTDIAG and seeing what the ICE800I message says.

Your first example showed sorting a 46 byte packed-decimal field! The sort probably couldn't accept that. Are only the first 2 bytes actually packed?

The FORMAT parameter is helpful when all the sort fields are the same format.

Bill Dennis,

Sort accepts a 46 byte packed decimal field.

Hmmm... now that I think about it, you need the April, 2006 DFSORT PTF to sort on a 46 byte PD field. Without the PTF, the limit is 32 bytes. With the PTF, the limit is 256 bytes. So that may explain what Thrivikram is seeing.

Thrivikram,

Ask your System Programmer to install z/OS DFSORT PTF UK90007 or DFSORT R14 PTF UK90006 (April, 2006) so you can sort on a 46-byte PD field.
