Hi All,

I have an application where there's a huge base of mainframe code and we are planning to move it to another platform. Can someone suggest whether there's any reverse engineering tool available in market which helps the analysis of the code?

I tried some tools which are specifically for impact analysis but what I'm looking here is a tool which analyze the whole program and give the diagramatic represenation / view of the program along with the logic.

In a way, if not exactly, UltraEdit or IBM - Rational Developer for System z might help you, they are pay-for-products.

Reverse engineering? Isn't it kind of migration to a different language /platform? Please choose the words carefully. Reverse engineering is illegal.

If you already have all of the source, what is there to "reverse engineer"?

From which platform to which platform? How much of the original functionality is to be preserved? Will the target system support the same database system, programming language(s), etc?

Has a "proof of concept" been done to show this can/will actually work or is this just someone's "vision" with no consideration of the size/feasibility of the task?

As far as a tool to read a mountain of code, screens, and reports and prepare a comprehensive "report" of what the system actually does, i know of nothing.

Sorry for using a wrong key word.

It is a migration of Mainframe COBOL code to DataStage. To migrate the code, the first step is to extract the functionality of the existing programs. I was checking whether there's any tool which helps that. Some of the answeres I got was

In many places it is perfectly legal. Only the US, which is run by corporations for the benefit of corporations, it's apparently not.

please,
an IT technical forum is not the place to parrot liberal BS.
what you are advocating means someone takes the time/effort/expense to develop a product and then everybody else should be allowed to benefit from the time/effort/expense - at no cost - and market the product as their own.

granted, in the US
it is a little more obvious that the those who have the power, tend to do things to keep it
than in other countries - where it is hidden under a cloak of liberal-feel-good lies.

Where is the ROI (return of investment) in doing this? Why not just hire some COBOL programmers? You also did not say what kind of platform you are moving from and to. Help us understand what you are supposed to do and why.

well this topic is 6 months old and OP probably has moved on or got a solution. This topic been resurrected by prino who just spends time on venting. Prino is warned several times about this and yet he still continues with his PITA attitude. Just ignore.
