I just wonder about such restrictions, I don't know what can be a "winning argument" to overcome such beliefs - are the bean counter still so ignorant, are the bean-counters just some recent pass-out from some B-schools and don't know that IT is part of Business (because they just don't know what is Y2K, some kind of abbreviation for them, probably)- they must listen to their programmers instead of giving "orders". Amen! Neutral

Not to mention the complexities involved adding a counter to a VB/VBA files

I'm guessing that the guys that made this decison don't know anything about the advanced functions of DFSORT/ICETOOL. They probably think DFSORT has a few simple control statements that everyone knows (e.g. SORT). They don't understand that complex DFSORT statements are needed to do tasks that DFSORT's ICETOOL can do more simply. I think the example here is a perfect illustration of that. If they are open-minded, then that example should convince them. But given that they made such a clueless decision in the first place, they probably aren't open-minded enough to reverse their decision. Sad for the "business" as it just wastes peoples' time doing unnecessary tasks.

Mostly, this is not the "bean counters" where i've been.

This is almost always due to rather weak* and incompetent managers who have been around for many years but haven't kept themselves or their staffs up to date. The worst example i've seen of this kind of clueless was when a fellow i worked with (who was working on y2k at the time, so it was fairly recent) was told that he could not promote a job that used SUM FIELDS=NONE to Production. . . The explanation from his director was "We use the sort to sort data, not write programs". . .

What i also find amazing is that something really, really convoluted done with SORT is often acceptable, but something quite straightforwad with ICETOOL is not allowed. . .

* Stubborn does not equate to strong and some of the weakest are most stubborn. . .

All the best,
di
