I ran the exact code you provided and this came out in my SYSOUT.

youtalkintome,

Make sure that your SYSIN control cards starts from pos 2. Also check the first line of your Sysout messages. It has the version of syncsort you are running. If it says SYNCSORT Z/OS 1.2.0 , then only you can run this step. If it says anything other than that then don't even bother running the job as JOIN feature is not supported in that version.
