Is there a way to increase the number of variables that can be stored on the profile pool?

I never gave much thought to there being a limit. Did you reach it? What's the allocation on your ISPPROF?

Bill,
Your response provided some great clues. I went out and found the PDS that was allocated to ISPPROF. I then determined that the ISRPROF member in the PDS contained the profile variables that I was storing.
I was up to +1440 before it choked.

The ISPPROF dataset is only 16 tracks for the first extent. It may just be a size issue.

Do you know if there is a limit to the number of variables that can be defined?

I'll need to find someone to re-allocate my ISPPROF dataset. Probably dangerous for me to do that.

Just submit a job to migrate it, log off and log on again, and what was combined primary+secondary space becomes plain primary space. Repeat as required...
