We have a job that occasionally has been abending. The datasets being sorted have 24 files containing variable blocked records. There have been times where the total number of records in a file has exceeded 200 million and the job has run just fine. Other times the file has been less than 200 million and the job has abended.

We were wondering what factors go into determining the sort work space allocated?

Which SORT product?

If DFSORT the answer will probably be "it's impossible to say with that information, but if you send us <good stuff here> to the support e-mail address we'll look at it and make suggestions".

I'll have to do the next bit: If SyncSORT, contact SyncSORT support.

For volumes on that scale, generalities won't really help you, there are so many different factors. Detailed information to/from the product support should.

Thanks, William! It is Syncsort. I'll see if I can find where their support is located.

They have a website, although probably the polite way is to go to whoever is responsible for liaison with them at your site.
