Hello,

We have MicroFocus Cobol Workbench and we use it extensively. Another package, I havenot seen or used is Mainframe Express, but will be made available to us if we make a good case why we needed Mainframe Express for development and testing environment.

Can someone provide points that are useful in mainframe express and make a good case..

Regards!

All these products are good and useful, but for the right kind of people. Most Mainframe people(I have seen) do not like to develop and test anywhere else other than a Mainframe. MF Express has some good features, mostly GUI interface to communicate with the mainframe (real time). You can drag and drop datasets to the Lan, view datasets from your desktop and a lot more good features. But what's the point, its waste of money. Two of my previous employers went for these products and it was a miserable failure. 400 people were trained on these products, but very few ever opened. In my opinion, an experienced programmer will get the job done proffesionaly in half the time on a Mainframe compared to the MF products. One reason for corporations to go for the MF products, is for managers to easily take an inventory of the situation and good in analysing a 'change Impact' accross programs, copybooks, Includes, etc.

I dont consider myself as experienced programmer, but a middle level programmer (6 yrs). But when I got a chance to work with MFCW, I liked it and since then I try to do most of the things in it...Now I guess I love it...the same way I love the 'green screens'!!
Well, mainframe cpu costs (maybe less), but MFCW being on desktop, is free of cost (ofcourse there is the license cost)!
If anybody asks me, I would suggest MFCW to try and get accustomed to it..It has its own charms!

Regards!
