Hi ,

I have a concern ..

Does the EOF (end of file) control character get messed up if I were to say Delete Last n records from an FB File in ISPF editor ?!!

Is it anyway safer from this perspective to use File Aid instead ..or is it essentially one and the same ?

The reason I ask is ...FTP such a File to an external agency . Now despite the File layout Copybooks at both ends being identical (including LRECL).. they are complaining of layout mismatch with the actual Physical File they received.

If its not the EOF problem ...any pointers around this ...would be appreciated.

Thnks

Vini,

It is not your EOF marker that is creating the problem .ISPF edit will create the EOF indicator. If you delete or add records to an existing file the eof marker is created once again.

A few things to check.

1.What is the format of SOURCE file? Is it FB or FBA. The carriage control can shift the layout.

2. Do you have any comp or comp-3 fields in the source file? If so you need to convert them to readable format.

Kolusu ,

Thanks for clarifying my concern ! Surprised

Source is FB and no comp fields. One which is PIC S9(6)V99 and is accounted for length 8.

1) However, it could be that they are expecting the carraige control in which case I should change File format to FBA... nope ? worth a try .

2) Is there a fixed number of bytes/chars by which the Layout shifts or messes up incase of missing a carriage control when one maybe expected ?

3) Is doing a FIND ALL P'.' a reasonable check to ensure there arent any JUNK chars in File owing to initialisation issues ? I did this check and things look pretty fine. Question

vini,

Is the external agency another mainframe or a PC? If it is a PC then into which application are they receiving it? If it is excel then they is a likely chance of trimming the leading zeroes and spaces by excel.

kolusu,

Yes , both ends are on MVS.

I think I am maybe close to finding a solution which am yet to try ... have to co-ordinate with the user before sending file ..as they do not hav a seperate test region.
