Hi,
I am new to the MVS JCl environment and would appreciate if someone could clarify my basic questions.
1)How do you check for errors in your jcl code(compiling and debugging).
2)Can the JCl be used in an interactivce mode.
3)How do you browse/search for pds.
4) How do you make a copy of an existing pds and edit it.
Please suggest me some online documentation or a few good books where I could get information about the navigation and general utilities of MVS JCL environment.
Thnanks a lot,
Kalyan. |

1)How do you check for errors in your jcl code(compiling and debugging).
A)I use CA-JCLCheck. Don't know what you mean by "compiling and debuging".
2)Can the JCl be used in an interactive mode.
A)No.
What do these next two questions have to do with JCL?
3)How do you browse/search for pds.
4)How do you make a copy of an existing pds and edit it.
For a general reference, I recommend the book "zOS JCL, 5th Edition by Gary DeWard Brown". Also, IBM's own manuals are quite good. |

|
Check the sysprint( for cobol error messages) and any displays in the programs can be seen in the sysout.

JCL by itself cannot do any thing. JCL is used to run programs and it is your programs that can be run in interactive mode.

3)How do you browse/search for pds.
|
Check this link Data Set List Utility (Option 3.4) which can be used for browsing/editing/deletion.. of datasets.
Check this link for Search-For Utility (Option 3.14)

4) How do you make a copy of an existing pds and edit it.
|
Check this link for Processing a Partitioned Data Set (PDS)
I would suggest that you read the following manual
ISPF User's Guide
Hope this helps...
Cheers

Hi,
Thanks for your suggestions and useful hyperlinks.
By compiling and debugging I meat that, before scheduling the job for execution, how can it be checked for any syntatical or format errors.
If scheduling is the only way to check it, then what is the least amount of time before it can be scheduled?
Thanks again, |

You can submit JCL with a parm on the job statement of TYPRUN=SCAN which will alert you to syntax errors without actually running the programs EXEC'd in the job. It will not tell you if you are going to have DSN problems though. _________________ My opinions are exactly that. |

Are CICS and TSO Logon examples of such programs. Are there any other such examples?
Thanks,
Diba. |
