where can I find the information whether a mount was specific or non specific in the SMF ?

Up to this point, we were using a combination of some fields from the JFCB in record 14. Those are the file sequence number and the disp field ( NEW, MOD , TMP ... ).

It's rather an old code but now I'm not sure it's correct. How can it be that an indication at the tape level ( specific / non specific ) is documented in a dataset level ( 14 is a close dataset event ) ?

Is there a more reliable place to dig this information from ?

m29,

Normally, only the input mounts are specific mounts, and all other mounts would be scratch mounts. If you use specific volume serials for new tape allocations, those mounts would be specific as well. Most installations use a generic tape unit with no volume serial.

Check this link for Using the Volume Mount Analyzer

Hope this helps...

Cheers

The assumption in which the specific mounts are input mounts is not true anymore.

There are all kinds of applications that manage their own tapes pool and require sepcific tapes for output.

well , I need to analyze SMF records myself so using the VMA is not helping ...
