I am working in IDMS for about 8 months. I am aware that relational capabilities can be achived in IDMS (IDMS/R). Then what is the advantage of converting it to DB2. ( I do not have knowledge of DB2)

Thanks,
arun

grarun,

IDMS was the fastest and most reliable database management system for many years and is also known to most reliable database management system in the marketplace by many technicians.

However, other facts may begin to outweigh the reliability, speed and performance of IDMS today. IDMS is a network database structure, where as Db2 is a relational database structure. Check some of the reasons as to why you want to migrate to DB2

  • Integrating IDMS database data is not simple
  • Extending IDMS data to web-based languages is not simple
  • IDMS license costs are rising
  • Skilled IDMS resources are increasingly difficult to find
  • Today's newer languages offer many capabilities not available with IDMS
  • Developer productivity can be increased dramatically

With DB2 all the above listed reasons are not valid.

Hope this helps...

Cheers

I would like to see proof of your statement. Please show the link to where CA announced this. Confused

So is it like IDMS/Relational has the above stated disadvantages?

Kolusu,
It has been 3 weeks and I am waiting for you to find a link to support your claim. Perhaps what you saw was the announcement of a drop-dead date for an old release. If you cannot find anything to back up your statement, please retract the statement, as this type of posting spreads incorrect and misleading information, and may place needless fear into people such as the original poster. Please note that the following link announces release 16 of IDMS:
http://www3.ca.com/Press/PressRelease.asp?CID=57699
I am interested in looking at your information if it is actually true. While my company does not use CA-IDMS, it does use CA-Datacom and Ideal (both of which also have new releases being announced).

Bstillwa,

I am extremely sorry for not able to provide you with a link. I guess you will not get off my back until I post the link to support my statement. Laughing

I will just edit my posts and remove the objectionable statement of mine. I apolozise to the OP for misguiding him with my statement.

Thanks to bstillwa for correcting me.

I remember seeing CA is not supporting IDMS R15 after Nov 2004. Not sure about others.
