I have not found a difinitive answer on the web, will CICS release 4.1 run without modification on z/OS V1.4?

I can only guess, but it probably should. I would question wether it is wise to use such an old CICS because if you do have problems you are out of luck and will then have to change to a higher release.

I think there's a good chance it won't work. LE (Language environment) for example changes at z/OS 1.4 in such a way that supported CICS releases (such as CICS TS 1.3) need a fix applying to initialize LE at all (we're working on applying this now). But CICS 4.1 has been out of support for some time so I'm 99% sure that this fix will not be available for that release. I suppose if you're using the unsupported pre-LE libraries (e.g. COBOL II and/or OS/VS COBOL) this might not be a problem.
Anyhow, I would either
1/ assume that it's not going to work and upgrade to a supported release of CICS/TS (which you should be doing anyhow)
or
2/ Hope for the best, be prepared to test it on a test z/OS 1.4 system, and have a contingency plan if it fails

It's possible that if it failed and you waved lots of money at IBM they might agree to produce a site specific fix or two for CICS 4.1; but you'd do well to check how much/how long (if they'd do it at all).

Though I'm not an expert, I have just installed z/OS 1.4 and was able to bring up my CICS 4.1 test system using the default LE libraries, etc. Though I had application file issues that I believe were created during catalog connection, CICS itself appeared to work fine. However, that doesn't mean that IMS and DB/2 connections and applications will work. Also, I have spoken to my business partner and they have several customers that are running z/OS 1.4 and CICS 4.1 with apparently no problems. I'll keep you updated on my progress.

I should have updated this issue when I resolved it, but better late than never.

I was able to run CICS 4.1 with no problems on z/OS 1.4 and did so in a production environment for 3 months before I finished our CICS/TS 2.3 migration.

The resolution was easier than I had expected. All that is needed is to make sure that those CICS 4.1 libararies that were in linklists or APF authorized under OS/390 are ported over to z/OS the same way. This goes for IMS and DB/2 versions 7. When I brought up the test systems under z/OS all my online systems worked with absolutely no problem!

Thanks for the update, vmbigot. It may well help somebody out in the future.
