nadh,

The Biggest difference between IMS and DB2 is that IMS is a Hierarchical database whereas DB2 is a relational database. check this link which explains about Hierarchical Databases

http://www.wdvl.com/Authoring/DB/Intro/heirarchical_databases.html

check this link which explains about Relational Database

http://www.wdvl.com/Authoring/DB/Intro/relational_databases.html

Also check this link which discusses about IMS vs DB2

http://mvsforums.com/helpboards/viewtopic.php?t=2766&highlight=ims

Hope this helps...

Cheers

Dear collegues,

Can anybody tell me a good way to transform IMS definitions into the ones for DB2?

Of course it is easy to change the segments into rows and the fields into columns. But functions in IMS like GHNP when there is no key defined between parent and child, you have to create something. Something that is easy to maintain, because the conversion is one thing - just a start - and the result has to be maintained for a long time. I would like to see some examples if there are some somewhere?

Methods in which people use a customized routine with the name CBLTDLI or something like that, did not make a good conversion. When you change from IMS to DB2, you should not see anything IMS-like in the converted source.

Regards,
