Just a kind note, that people generally do not like you asking such elementary questions in forums like this, especially ones that should be in your basic COBOL books. To that end, you might consider obtaining one. Also, people generally do not like it when you ask questions that can be answered so easily by consulting a book or even a web search. As an example, I took all of 10 seconds effort and found this web page: http://www.difranco.net/cobol/Readings/ctrlbrk.htm which answers all of your questions.

Welcome here, and I am glad to see you participate, but I just thought I would point out some etiquette for web boards like this. Now granted, you definitely got a much more congenial answer out of me that you will get out of most, so in a way be thankful for that.

Have a nice day.
