I am looking for a way to quickly copy a database from one DB2 subsystem to another using the utilities supplied by IBM. I currently unload each tablespace from production and load it to test, but this is a very tedious and manual process. Is there another way to "clone" databases quickly and easily?

Unfortunately that is the ideal way of doing it. You can automate the process where you submit a job which unloads the data and xmits/NDM the data to test region and then trigger the load job.

DSN1COPY also can be used to Copy tables from one subsystem to another. Check this link for a detailed explanation of the process

Check this link for a detailed explanation of the utility DSN1COPY

If the data to be loaded is not that large, then you can try the following method shown here.

Hope this helps...

Cheers

Kolusu,
I could make a career out of copying tables from one subsystem to another in this place! I had a feeling that the unload/load process was going to be the best approach. I also looked at DSN1COPY. I had the thought of using the most current image copy of the production tablespaces as input for test, but DSN1COPY makes me nervous. I'll make a good backup of the entire test subsystem before I start playing around with DSN1COPY.
Thanks for the help.

If this task is really eating you up, it is probably worth to examine tools from vendors like BMC. Their license costs are pretty high, but they nearly do all the work needed, for instance copying databases (here ChangeManager is involved to do what they call migrations).
CA has a similar tool-set (aquired from Platinum), but I find the BMC-Tools far more intuitive.

The costs of these tools are high, but they free you from "stupid" day-to-day tasks.

Christian,
I was aware of OEM DB2 tools, but have never had the opportunity to work with them. My friends at Mitsubishi use Platinum and are very happy with it, but as you said it is quite expensive. For a shop our size (4 programmers and me) it's too expensive. Do you know of any shareware or other inexpensive DB2 management software that might have similar functionality?
Thanks,
vmbigot

Hello vmbigot,

no, sorry. If you have these expensive tools with all their funcionality at hand, you don't look for alternatives.

good luck

Christian,

Thanks. It never occured to me that if a shop has the expensive tools why would they look for freebies! Embarassed If I find any of the inexpensive tools I'll update this post with the appropriate info.
