Yes it is possible but it is more like you would do in Easytrieve not COBOL.
Just create another field definition with overlaying byte positions.
Sorry, been out of the trade for sometime now and can't recall the exact syntax.  |

Itanium,
Here is a sample code to show you redefinition along with reference modification

DEFINE W-TEXT W 50 A
DEFINE W-CHAR W-TEXT 1 A OCCURS 50
DEFINE W-PART-CHAR W 10 A
JOB INPUT NULL
W-TEXT = 'Itanium'
MOVE W-CHAR(4) 4 TO W-PART-CHAR
DISPLAY RESULT
|
W-PART-CHAR will have nium
