I would like to know how different is the way datasets are allocated in an SMS managed subsystems.

To be more specific i was creating GDGs in the mainframe which is SMS managed and i found out that the GDG versions can be created without defining the 'model' dataset, i.e i created only the 'base' and then 'versions'. I have come up with some questions.

1. What is the difference between DISP=(NEW,CATLG,) and DISP=(NEW,KEEP,) in an SMS mangaed scenario.

2. Is there any default VOLSER wjere the datset will be created if i specify DISP=(NEW,KEEP,)

3. What is the significance of a 'GDG model' dataset in both SMS and nonSMS managed scenarios.

BTW after i posted i checked out the topic on GDGs and i was able to get the answer for the 3rd question..

regarding the default VOLSER, can i get that info from the ISMF menu?
