aquarian,

Check this link for a brief explanation of Tandem Computers

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tandem_Computers

You can compare this against mvs history which was discussed here

http://mvsforums.com/helpboards/viewtopic.php?p=26151#26151

Hope this helps...

Cheers

I would imagine that as long as there are banks and they use ATM's, then Tandem computers will be around.

Tandem used to be really big in the 90s, and you had your pick of countries in which to work. A senior EDS international manager said (mid 90s) that "there is a world-wide shortage of tandem people". Now however, although the machines have not gone away, jobs are far and few between.

Would it be a good idea to be trained on a tandem? It depends on what you'll be learning/doing on the tandem. Some people do only minor stuff and no other tandem shop will touch them, because they just don't know enough, regardless of how many years experience they have. However, this is true of all platforms...

From what I've seen, if you are a good tandem guy, then your chances of holding onto a good Contract (for a long time) are better than the IBM mainframe guys who are having their contracts terminated. Why? Because there are plenty of IBM'ers out there, but not so with tandem.

As for S/COBOL ("Screen COBOL") on the tandem, one IBM'er I worked with who was expert on the mainframe, but was cross-trained to the tandem, said that the actual design of a COBOL program needed to be quite different from an IBM version, in order to be able to cater for the dual processor.
