Hi,

Can anyone point me to information about the VSAMASST utility from EMC? There is only basic information on their website.

It's a utility to backup and restore VSAM files.

I can't find any information on this utility. I'm looking for a detailed user guide and a performance-oriented documentation using VSAMASST.

Thanks

This type of documentation is usually available after the product has been purchased.

If the copy of the product you are using is legal then there should be at least one copy of the documentation floating around your shop - if there isn't then you can get it ordered.

If it ain't legal - then forget it.

Thankyou...

Of course it's a legal copy. I work for one of the largest financial institutions in the world and we do NOT practise software piracy!

Unfortunately, the bureaucracy in such a large organization makes obtaining such documentation a lengthy process. I've contacted several systems people in the organization and I've had very little luck in obtaining the docs. We have been using this for over 10 years although I have only been involved with the use of this utility for only a few months. However, I am now attempting to tune the batch process. I'm sure that I will eventually find the required documentation from within the organization.

My primary goal is to attempt to increase the performance of several batch jobs that utilize this utility regarding backing up and restoring many VSAM files. I was hoping to use this forum to find ideas and tips from others who may be familiar with VSAMASST regarding how VSAMASST can be tuned to increase the performance and thoughput of these functions.

I have been able to increase these job steps by the adjusting the normal performance parameters in JCL including Buffers, Region size, etc. I've used STROBE to generate performance profiles and used this information to validate my enhancements. However, I'm at a point now that I'd like to determine if there is anything that I can do with VSAMASST to further the productivity of these batch jobs. I'd like to consider the pros and cons of using VSAMASST vs ADRDSSU as it pertains to performance considerations. I have used FAVER in the past, but this installation does not have FAVER installed. Some detailed information on the VSAMASST product from my organization will indeed be helpful, in addition to any insight from the professionals here on this forum would surely be appreciated.

Thank you for your consideration and efforts in attempting to assist me with my inquiry. I appreciate your time and your responses.
