I agree with what you say.

If you want to know the length of third variable of a variable, say WS-VARIABLE, then it might be possible to write a macro to do it. But then you might as well hard code the name of third variable, unless you keep on changing variable name.

But if you want to know the length of nth variable of WS-VARIABLE then I don't see how to do it, unless you create a table to contain length of all elements of the concerned variable. Or put a delimiter element with some special value after every element. Maybe this feature is available in some language!
